How to Write a Love Letter

The following is an excerpt from The Writing Party Inspirations: Have Fun Exploring Your Creative Side

Writing a Love Letter

One of the most treasured of letters is the love letter. It feels so good to read and reread the words of affection and appreciation from a romantic partner. When it comes time to write a love letter, however, it can be difficult to express our love in words. Some of us feel self-conscious declaring our feelings and others worry about just how to say what we feel without being awkward. To overcome your apprehension, it helps to remember that it is the thought and effort that you put into the letter that is more important than the words you actually use. It’s okay to be vulnerable with the person you love; trust the relationship.

Write with your heart. If that is not enough to get you started, below are a few ideas for composing your own amorous epistle. Pick and choose those suggestions that speak to your relationship.

Use someone’s name to create a beautiful Acrostic Poem. Be inspired and learn how in our article “Acrostic Poems: Playing with Words.”

How to Write a Love Letter

Step 1 How to Begin a Love Letter

Begin with an endearing salutation such as My Dearest, My Darling, My Beloved or a pet name. Then explain why you are writing a love letter now. Perhaps it’s a special occasion like a birthday, anniversary, or Valentine’s day. Maybe you have been reflecting on how important someone is to you. You might be away from a loved one and are missing the connection. Let the recipient know why it is so important for you to say now how much you love him or her.

Step 2 Add a Memory

Describe a precious memory you share. Reminisce about the instant you met or fell in love. Write about a joyous experience or a moment of connection. Be specific and detailed. Include sensory details. How did she look, what was he wearing, was there a scent, or music? Most importantly explain how the experience made you feel and how the memory continues to affect you. Explain your emotional and physical response. You may speak at length about a single defining memory or compose a short list of precious moments.

Step 3 Describe Why Your Loved One is Special

Next, let your significant other know how you are feeling now. Tell your partner why and what you love about him or her. People enjoy reading about how attractive they are. Don’t focus on physical beauty alone, but don’t skip it either. Write a well-rounded letter which encompasses your emotional, intellectual, and physical attraction. What does this person bring to your life? How does he or she make your life better and enrich your daily existence? How does he or she make you a better person? What is special about this individual and how does this individual contribute to beauty and joy in the world? What do you appreciate most about your paramour? When you write your love letter, describe what strengthens your bond with one another.

Create something meaningful and memorable for your loved ones by composing a tribute, poem, letter, or memoir and wrap it up in a festive package. Learn more in our article “Writing Gifts for the Holidays.”

Step 4 Look Ahead

Close by looking ahead. Let your lover know where you hope to be in the future. What are you looking forward to tomorrow, next week, next year, decades from now? What fun or intimate experience do you hope to share this coming weekend? If you are now apart, how do you envision your reunion? What do you hope to be doing as you grow old together? What shared dreams will you accomplish? How do you envision your lives many years from now? Reaffirm your commitment to the relationship and reassure your partner that you will continue to cherish him or her always. For a long-term relationship, include plans for the distant future. For a newer relationship, keep it lighter and focus on the near future—tomorrow, this weekend, this summer.

Don’t forget to say, “I love you.”

A love letter is a lasting tribute to your love. It makes your partner feel valued and assured of your lasting commitment. A letter is the opportunity to express your feelings in a way that you might not feel comfortable doing aloud. Get down on paper your deepest feelings. Don’t let the moment to express your love pass.
