Writing Prompts for a New Year

Perhaps this year your resolutions included writing more often. If so, here are a few writing prompts to help you keep your resolution.

Story Prompts

  • Describe an underwater adventure.
  • You are trapped in an elevator with five strangers who turn out not to be strangers.
  • You receive a letter in the mail that reads, “Remember me?”
  • Ten wizards show up at your character’s door seeking help.
  • Your cute new neighbor is in a band, is too noisy, and keeps coming over to borrow things.
  • While visiting the zoo, a gorilla calls you over and says, “It’s my turn.”
  • Distracted, you accidentally wrap one of your possessions and give it to someone as a gift. Now you have to get it back.
  • Your character goes to his or her car to drive to work in the morning and finds a neighbor dead under the car.
  • Your spouse has been working oversees for the last 12 months. When he/she returns, he/she has a newborn baby.
  • Your new home is haunted by the spirit of a comedian. OR You become possessed by the spirit of a comedian.
  • At a magic show, out of the magic box appears someone your character thought she/he would never see again.
  • A storm is coming and the only shelter available is with your overbearing, attractive boss.
  • Your main character has lost his/her parrot who knows how to speak the words that will reveal a dangerous secret.
  • You have just opened a bake shop in a quant little seaside town and begin to meet your interesting and eccentric neighbors. Include recipes in your story.
  • In the process of a home remodel, your main character discovers a mysterious object hidden under a floor board.
  • Borrow the theme from a children’s storybook and turn it into a story for adults.
  • Tell a story from the perspective of a housecleaner.
  • A doctor realizes that their pet cat can quickly heal broken bones when it purrs.
  • You are fishing and reel in something other than a fish and your life changes forever.
  • It’s time to start over in a new town, with a new job, and a new life.
